A Message from the City Manager
On behalf of our Council and staff, welcome to San Gabriel’s website.
San Gabriel is a most extraordinary place on the landscape of Southern California. Home to the fourth and most prosperous in the string of 21 California missions that once defined this region as an outpost of Colonial Spain, today’s San Gabriel takes pride in being the birthplace of the Los Angeles region.
Modern visitors to San Gabriel, however, will see a different place: a community of wonderful neighborhoods appealing to all income levels; a city resplendent in arts and cultural opportunities, including the legendary Mission Playhouse; and an incomparable experience for the discriminating diner, with a wide variety of world-class specialty and ethnic restaurants all located within a short distance.
There’s the historic Mission District, where three different museums await you…or the excitement of Valley Boulevard, with its rich array of shopping, hotel and entertainment options. But San Gabriel is more than history, culture, and fine dining. To 41,000 residents in 4 square miles, set beneath the scenic San Gabriel Mountains, it’s home.
San Gabriel is also a progressive community with top-tier public safety services, award winning development programs, and a wide variety of parks and recreation services. The City Council, elected at large, is re-envisioning the City’s government with an eye toward openness, transparency, and innovation. More than 190 employees serve you in eight departments; watch this website as these new programs begin to unfold.
We are glad you are here. We invite you to become more familiar with the City of San Gabriel and take an active part in its future. Explore this website to learn more about the many aspects of life in San Gabriel; then feel free to contact us if we can be of service.
Best regards,
Steve
